Silencing the shadow: Erika’s fight against Gender-Based Violence in Kisumu
Erika Jacobs, hailing from Norway, embarked on a transformative journey as part of the Norec program at YWCA Kenya, Kisumu branch, focusing on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Partnering with Y Global and Amathea, Erika played a pivotal role in various aspects of the SRHR program, from conceiving innovative activities to evaluating their impact. However, the most profound change in her journey was her deep dive into addressing Gender Based Violence (GBV).
Upon conducting a needs assessment and data collection survey, Erika uncovered a distressing reality in Kisumu—high rates of violence against women and girls. Disturbingly, very few cases were reported to the authorities due to misconceptions, lack of knowledge about reporting channels, and the social stigma associated with police involvement. Erika took it upon herself to lead the charge against this issue. She organized webinars and initiated a technical working group to create tools for data collection and reporting of GBV cases. In doing so, she aimed not just to collect data but to effect tangible change in her community, breaking the silence surrounding GBV.
Erika's exchange year was a transformative journey of adaptation and learning. Beyond adapting to a new culture, she emerged as a catalyst for change, challenging misconceptions and addressing a critical issue that had long plagued her community. Her dedication to empowering those affected by GBV and crafting practical tools for change marked the most significant change in her remarkable journey.
